KAM, through its Automotive Sector, has engaged the Principal Secretary State Department for Industry to discuss the state of the motor vehicle assembly business in Kenya. The meeting brought together motor vehicle assemblers in the country.
Speaking during the session, KAM Automotive Sector Chair,Ashit Shah, noted that in line with the National Automotive Policy, the implementation of local sourcing of the automotive sector by manufacturers is progressing well, regulated under the Legal Notice 84; The Tax Procedures for Unassembled Motor Vehicles & Trailers, Regulation of 2019. The industry continues to share areas of review to address any issues required to support proper implementation of the Policy
He further added that to this end, the motor vehicle assemblers have developed proposals to review specific provisions of Legal Notice 84 to spur the sector’s growth. This is based on the industry’s growth dynamics, such as the recent entry of electric vehicles in the country.
The Principal Secretary State Department for Industry, Dr.Juma Mukhwana, also noted that Kenya’s automotive sector remains vibrant and more progressive, as compared to its peers in the East and Central African Region. He further added that the State Department for Industry shall continue to work together with KAM and all the other relevant agencies to implement these proposals that seek to drive growth within the local automotive sector.
