M.P. Shah Hospital has stepped up its fight against kidney disease by launching a dedicated kidney transplant ward to enhance access to nephrology services. The new ward, constructed and equipped under the patronage of Mr. Mohanlal Karania, is a modern facility which will be able to handle more than 10 transplants in a month. Having conducted over 20 successful kidney transplants since the year began, the Hospital now seeks to expand its kidney
transplant services to accommodate even more patients.
“We are proud to see this idea finally come to life, and are confident that this facility will be beneficial to the many people who need kidney transplant services in the country and beyond,” said Mr. Kishore Shah. To complement the expansion and physical facilities available, the chairman of the board of Governors, Dr. Manoj Shah has disclosed that M.P. Shah Hospital is currently addressing the need to improve skills for nephrology services and increase the numbers of those handling patients with Kidney diseases.“In this regard, I want to commend all our stakeholders for collaborating to launch and develop this facility that will be of great benefit to people with kidney disease from Kenya and beyond,” he noted.
The CEO of M.P. Shah Hospital, Dr.Toseef Din noted that the Hospital is aware of the community’s dire need to improve all aspects of nephrology services alongside other allied disciplines such as urology, anaesthesia and nutrition.“We have taken steps to bridge the gap and fight the kidney diseases and its negative effects on health and the economy,” said Dr. Din.
Dr. Hussein Bagha, the lead nephrologist at M.P. Shah Hospital decried over the dual burden of bothcommunicable and non-communicable diseases including Kidney diseases. With estimates showing that 4 million Kenyans have chronic kidney disease, a significant proportion of this population progresses to kidney failure.“Out of these, about 10,000 people develop end-stage kidney disease and require dialysis – and then kidney transplant, yet only about 10% of these people are able to access these important services,” he disclosed.
M.P. Shah Hospital currently seeks to improve access to specialized clinical services, and has embraced
collaboration at the regional level to develop a centre of excellence for nephrology services.
