Businesses owned by youth ,Women and Persons living with disabilities(PWDs) took up the tenders worth KES 4.15 Billion from Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) during the last Financial Year (FY) (ended 30th June 2024).
The uptake surpassed the KES 1.2Billion target for the Year that the Utility firm had set under Access to Government Procurement Opportunities (AGPO).

In the previous FY 2024,the Company awarded KES.472Million worth of tenders to the Groups.
Kenya Power’s General Manager for Supply and Logistics Dr.John Ng’eno attributed this to the impressive uptake of AGPO tenders to deliberate effort by the Company to sensitize target groups on Procurement opportunities.
”During the last financial year, the Company sustained education forums for the special interests groups on how to participate in the procurement process.
The uptake was steady over the years owing to the engagements and we hope to continue sustaining 100 percent absorption of the annual AGPO budgets as more Kenyans becomes aware of the opportunities” .Said Dr.Nge’no.
Under the AGPO category, the Utility Firm awards the tenders that are not highly technical.
They includes the supply of locally available materials and common user items, work and services, and the provision of cleaning services, among others.
The Youth-Owned businesses took up the huge chunk of the total value of AGPO tenders accounting for KES.3.8Billion followed by those owned by women and PWDs at KES 324Million and KES1.3 Million respectively.
”Through AGPO,we aim to foster inclusivity on our procurement processes, Going forward, our focus will be to ensure that they participate actively on our procurement as is the case with the youth” Said Dr.Ng’eno.
Kenya Power is collaborating with Financial Institutions to provide linkages for Financial support to the interest groups and to facilitate thier participation in the procurement processes.
This is in addition to the sensitization workshops and conference targeting these groups,Pre-Bid conferences during the tendering period and to enhance knowledge, increased publicity of the available AGPO opportunities as well as prompt for suppliers to strengthen their cash flow.
The current FY,the Company is targeting to award KES 116 Billon worth of AGPO tenders to the 3 special interest Groups.
