
Eldoret International Airport has made a significant stride in the aviation industry by resuming cargo flight operations, starting with Astral Aviation leading the way.After a year-long hiatus, This noteworthy development comes as a result of concerted efforts by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and key aviation stakeholders, including the Kenya Airfreight Handling Limited (KAICC), the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), and with the invaluable support of the North Rift Economic Bloc (NoREB).
The return of cargo flights was celebrated with the arrival of an Astral Aviation aircraft from Sharjah, UAE. This momentous occasion was graced by several high-profile figures, including Nandi County Governor and Chair of NOREB, H.E. Stephen Sang, KAA Board Chairman, Hon. Caleb Kositany, and KRA Board Chairman, Mr. Anthony Mwaura, among other distinguished government officials. Their presence underscored the collaborative spirit and shared vision towards enhancing Kenya’s cargo aviation sector.
During the reception event held at Eldoret Airport, Hon Kositany, shared his insights on the venture’s potential to elevate cargo traffic, improve connectivity, and stimulate trade. Noting that the initiative is expected to significantly benefit the economy, opening up new business opportunities and strengthening the region’s position in global trade networks.
Hon. Kositany further emphasized the crucial role of air cargo in the aviation industry and highlighted KAA’s ongoing strategy to bolster cargo handling capabilities across its network. “Air cargo is an integral component of the aviation industry,” he remarked, acknowledging the importance of public-private partnerships in developing and advancing the Authority’s projects.
Eldoret International Airport is uniquely positioned to serve as a hub for agribusiness exports, with its two warehouses capable of handling over 100 metric tons of dry cargo. The airport’s strategic location and favorable climatic conditions make it an ideal gateway for exporting agricultural produce, including cut flowers, French beans, and avocados, among others.
