Airtel Money Kenya Limited has donated KES 50 million to Kenya Red Cross Society(KRCS) in support of the government-led response to the devastating effects of the drought affecting nearly over 5.1 million people across the country.
Airtel Money’s donation will be channeled towards purchasing food items and rehabilitation of boreholes for a more sustainable impact in the affected areas.
Urgency in providing food relief in the arid and semi-arid areas in Kenya continues to rise to alarming proportions, with families and their livestock in 23 most affected counties at greater risk.
Speaking during the handover at the Kenya Red Cross headquarters, Airtel Kenya’s CEO Ashish Malhotra said, “Airtel Kenya joins the Kenya Red Cross, and other well-wishers in solidarity with our affected brothers and sisters to provide much-needed relief. Together, we need to join hands to not only provide the much-needed food items and reduce suffering, but also to rehabilitate water facilities to secure livelihoods”.
Airtel strives to transform and enrich lives as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility and through this donation Kenyans from the affected areas will get relief.
“The current drought situation is a huge challenge that needs concerted efforts. We all need to come together to support the affected communities. I want to thank Kenya Redcross for the various initiatives they have taken to help Kenyans,” said Airtel Money Director, Anne Kinuthia -Otieno.
“With the number of people in need of assistance rising each day, we need every member of our Society to join the efforts to save the lives of those faced with the worst drought in generations.I want to thank the Airtel team for this donation and especially for making provision of water which critical for both domestic and livestock use one of the areas of support,” said Dr.Asha Mohammed Secretary General,Kenya Red Cross Society(KRCS)
“As a society our focus is to ensure that the most vulnerable of the 5.1 million affected aree reached even as we continue to appeal for more to reach every needy Kenyan’” She added.
